Benchmark page 1 From Knight and Starnes: “Postbuckling Behaviour of Axially Compressed Graphite-Epoxy Cylindrical Panels with Circular Holes” 1984 ASME and Stanley G.M: “Continuum Based Shell Elements” - Stanford University 1985 The above papers present test results that can be used as a composite FEA benchmark. The problem consists of a section of a cylindrical pressure vessel clamped at its base, simply supported at its sides and free to slide vertically at its top edge. An enforced displacement of 0.8mm is applied at the top edge and the corresponding force is measured. In addition a buckling test is performed. This problem lends itself to the definition and use of a Cylindrical Coordinate System to define the material datum. From there the 16 ply layup can be defined and the problem analysed
